The Problem: When Data Loses Its Meaning

In most companies today, the real issue isn’t a lack of data—it’s that the data is trapped in meaningless lakes. We’ve spent years worrying about formats and schemas (structural interoperability), but we’ve completely ignored what the data actually represents.

This gap is a dealbreaker for anyone trying to build reliable AI agents. Without a solid grasp of context, AI systems just end up hallucinating. To fix this, we need to move past simple data plumbing and start building a Knowledge Fabric where both people and machines actually understand the information they’re using.

What is a Semantic Backbone (SBB)?

Think of the Semantic Backbone (SBB) as your enterprise’s authoritative source of truth. It’s critical infrastructure that uses knowledge graphs to give your data the context it needs to be useful.

By using clear semantic standards, the SBB creates meaning contracts that machines can actually execute. This turns scattered data into a shared repository of expertise. Ultimately, it’s about building a layer of trust that ensures your AI is consistent and its reasoning is actually explainable.

What the Semantic Backbone Council (SBC) Does

The Semantic Backbone Council (SBC) is an independent group dedicated to making the SBB a reality across the industry. We aren’t tied to any one vendor; our goal is to ensure this approach becomes a standard way of doing business.

Our founding members set the strategic direction, but the real work happens in the development of playbooks—practical toolkits and best practices that organizations can actually use. We’re also focused on building a community where everyone can learn how to put these principles into practice.

Our Four Core Principles

We run on four straightforward ideas: First, Semantic Integrity—making sure everyone (and every AI agent) is finally talking the same language. Second, Deterministic Reasoning—killing the hallucination problem by grounding AI in verifiable facts. Third, Interoperable Knowledge—connecting those old data silos so you can actually reuse your assets. And fourth, Semantic Independence—making sure your business logic isn’t locked into a proprietary platform, protecting your world models and your digital sovereignty.

The SBC Playbook: Getting Things Done

The SBC Playbook isn’t just theory; it’s a practical guide. It includes a Readiness Model to help you see if your current architecture is actually prepared for this shift.

We provide clear steps for connecting to SBB concepts while keeping your logic independent of your tech stack. We share real-world case studies and ROI models to help you move from silos to a knowledge fabric. Finally, we set objective standards that you can drop straight into your RFPs to ensure you’re getting quality, compatible solutions.

Where We’re Heading

Our roadmap is all about execution. Here’s what’s on the horizon:

 It begins with the following:

  1. Getting organized, setting our bylaws, and bringing on new members.
  2. Launching the first version of our standards and building community visibility.
  3. Creating industry benchmarks and a collaborative environment that crosses organizational boundaries.
  4. Ensuring these principles evolve as technology advances.

Join the Movement

We’re looking for organizations that want to help build a future of trustworthy, AI-ready data. There are plenty of ways to jump in, from contributing to standards to joining our strategic meetings.

If you want to make sure your infrastructure is ready for the next generation of enterprise intelligence, let’s talk about how you can get involved with the Semantic Backbone Council.
